Abram Rescues Lot

A Stranger in the Land

Genesis 14:1–16

1During the time of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations, 2these kings waged war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3All these joined together in the valley of Siddim, which is the salt sea. 4For twelve years they had been subject to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5In the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him attacked the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim. 6And the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as Elparan, near the wilderness. 7Then they turned back and arrived at Enmishpat (that is, Kadesh), where they conquered the entire territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezontamar. 8Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (which is Zoar) marched out and engaged them in battle in the valley of Siddim— 9against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings fighting against five. 10Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and fell there, while the survivors escaped to the mountains. 11The victors seized all the possessions and food supplies of Sodom and Gomorrah, and then left. 12They also captured Lot, Abram's nephew, who was living in Sodom, along with everything he owned, and carried him off. 13A survivor escaped and informed Abram the Hebrew. Abram was living in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, who was the brother of Eshcol and Aner. These men were allied with Abram. 14When Abram heard that his brother had been taken captive, he armed his 318 trained servants, who were born in his own house, and pursued them to Dan. 15During the night, he divided his servants and attacked them. He defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, which is to the left of Damascus. 16He brought back all the goods, and also rescued his brother Lot, along with Lot's belongings, the women, and the other people.
