Ishmael Is Born

The Covenant

Genesis 16:1–16

1Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given him any children. She had an Egyptian servant woman named Hagar. 2Sarai told Abram, "Look, the LORD has kept me from having children. Please sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3So after Abram had been living in the land of Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian servant Hagar and gave her to Abram as a wife. 4He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once she realized she was pregnant, she began to look down on her mistress. 5Sarai said to Abram, "This wrong against me is your fault! I placed my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she treats me with contempt. Let the LORD decide between you and me." 6Abram replied to Sarai, "Your servant is under your authority. Do whatever you think is right with her." So Sarai treated her harshly, and Hagar ran away from her. 7The angel of the LORD discovered her beside a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring along the road to Shur. 8He asked, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She answered, "I am running away from my mistress Sarai." 9The angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and place yourself under her authority." 10The angel of the LORD also told her, "I will make your descendants so numerous that no one will be able to count them." 11The angel of the LORD continued, "You are pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, because the LORD has heard your suffering." 12He will be a wild man. His hand will be against every man, and every man's hand will be against him. He will live in the presence of all his brothers. 13She gave a name to the LORD who had spoken to her, saying, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Have I truly seen the one who sees me?" 14That is why the well was named Beerlahairoi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered. 15Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram, and Abram gave the boy the name Ishmael. 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
