Psalm 63: My Soul Thirsts for You

Psalms tied to his years on the run

PreviousNext

Psalms 63:1–11

1O God, you are my God; early will I seek you. My soul thirsts for you; my flesh longs for you in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. 2To see your power and your glory, as I have seen you in the sanctuary. 3Because your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4So I will bless you while I live; I will lift up my hands in your name. 5My soul will be as satisfied as if I had eaten rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips. 6when I remember you on my bed and meditate on you in the watches of the night. 7Because you have been my help, therefore in the shadow of your wings I will rejoice. 8My soul follows hard after you; your right hand upholds me. 9But those who seek my soul, to destroy it, will go into the lower parts of the earth. 10They will fall by the sword; they will be a portion for foxes. 11But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who swears by him will glory, but the mouth of those who speak lies will be stopped.

About this passage

What it says

Its title places David in the Wilderness of Judah. In a dry and weary land, his soul thirsts for God. He says God's loving devotion is better than life, and he sings in the shadow of God's wings.

Where this fits

One of 19 passages in David's Psalms and Prayers of David, in the group “Psalms tied to his years on the run.”

Good to know

The title does not say when. Because verse 11 speaks of “the king,” some readers place it during Absalom's revolt.
