2 accounts of this passage

2 Samuel 5:17–25

17When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines came to seek David; and David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. 18The Philistines arrived and spread out across the valley of Rephaim. 19David asked the LORD, "Should I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?" The LORD answered, "Go! I will absolutely deliver the Philistines into your hands." 20David went to Baalperazim and defeated them there. He said, "The LORD has burst through my enemies in front of me like a flood of waters." That's why the place was named Baalperazim. 21The Philistines left their images there, and David and his men burned them. 22But the Philistines came back again and spread out across the valley of Rephaim. 23David asked the LORD again, and the LORD said, "Do not go up directly; instead, circle around behind them and approach from the direction of the mulberry trees." 24When you hear the sound of movement in the tops of the mulberry trees, rouse yourself, for then the LORD will go out before you to strike the Philistine army. 25David did exactly what the LORD commanded, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Geba to Gezer.

What happened?

When the Philistines heard David was king, they came looking for him in the Valley of Rephaim. David asked the LORD whether to attack, and the LORD said he would give them into his hand. David defeated them. When they came back, the LORD told David to circle behind them and wait for the sound of marching in the treetops, because the LORD would go out ahead of him.
