A Shoot from the Stump of Jesse

The prophets look ahead

Isaiah 11:1–5

1A new shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a branch will grow from his roots. 2The spirit of the LORD will rest on him — the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. 3He will have quick understanding in the fear of the LORD. He won't judge by what his eyes see or make decisions based on what his ears hear. 4But with righteousness he will judge the poor, and reprove with fairness for the meek of the earth; and he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked. 5Righteousness will be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness will be the belt around his hips.
