Moses' Story · Event 39 of 59
Aaron and His Sons Become Priests
At Mount Sinai
Leviticus 8:1–9:24
1The LORD spoke to Moses and said, 2"Bring Aaron and his sons, along with the priestly garments, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering, the 2 rams, and the basket of unleavened bread. 3Then gather the entire community at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting." 4Moses did exactly what the LORD commanded. When the whole community had assembled at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, 5Moses said to the congregation, "This is what the LORD has commanded to be done." 6Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. 7He dressed Aaron in the tunic, tied the sash around his waist, put the robe on him, and placed the ephod over it. Then he fastened the ephod's skillfully woven band around him to hold it in place. 8He placed the breastplate on Aaron's chest and put the Urim and Thummim inside it. 9He set the turban on Aaron's head and attached the golden plate — the holy crown — to the front of it, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 10Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, setting them apart as holy. 11He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar 7 times, anointing the altar, all its utensils, the basin, and its stand, to set them apart as holy. 12He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron's head, anointing him to set him apart as holy. 13Moses then brought Aaron's sons forward, dressed them in tunics, tied sashes around their waists, and put headbands on them, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 14He brought the bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons placed their hands on the bull's head. 15Moses slaughtered it, then took the blood and applied it with his finger to each of the horns around the altar, purifying the altar. He poured the rest of the blood at the base of the altar, setting it apart as holy and making atonement for it. 16He took all the fat that was on the internal organs, the covering above the liver, and the 2 kidneys with their fat, and Moses burned it on the altar. 17The rest of the bull — its hide, meat, and waste — he burned outside the camp, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 18Next, he brought the ram for the burnt offering. Aaron and his sons placed their hands on the ram's head. 19Moses slaughtered it and splashed the blood on all sides of the altar. 20He cut the ram into pieces, and Moses burned the head, the pieces, and the fat on the altar. 21He washed the internal organs and the legs with water, then burned the entire ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering with a pleasing aroma — an offering made by fire to the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 22Then he brought the second ram — the ram of consecration. Aaron and his sons placed their hands on its head. 23Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood. He applied it to the tip of Aaron's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot. 24He then brought Aaron's sons forward and applied some of the blood to the tip of each one's right ear, the thumb of each right hand, and the big toe of each right foot. Moses splashed the remaining blood on all sides of the altar. 25He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat covering the internal organs, the covering of the liver, the 2 kidneys with their fat, and the right shoulder. 26From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake, one cake made with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat and on the right shoulder. 27He put all of this into the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved it before the LORD as a wave offering. 28Moses then took everything from their hands and burned it on the altar alongside the burnt offering. This was the consecration offering — a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD. 29Moses took the breast and waved it before the LORD as a wave offering. This was Moses' portion of the ram of consecration, just as the LORD had commanded him. 30Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron and his garments, and on his sons and their garments. In this way he set apart Aaron and his garments, and his sons and their garments, as holy. 31Moses told Aaron and his sons, "Cook the meat at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and eat it there with the bread from the basket of consecration, just as I was commanded: 'Aaron and his sons are to eat it.' 32Whatever meat and bread is left over, burn it with fire. 33Do not leave the entrance of the Tent of Meeting for seven days, until your consecration period is complete, for he will consecrate you for seven days. 34What was done today is what the LORD commanded, in order to make atonement for you. 35You must stay at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting day and night for 7 days, carrying out the LORD's instructions — otherwise you will die. This is what I've been commanded." 36Aaron and his sons did everything the LORD had commanded through Moses. Chapter 91On the 8th day, Moses called Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel together. 2He told Aaron, "Take a young calf for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering — both without any defect — and present them before the LORD." 3Then tell the children of Israel: 'Take a kid of the goats for a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year and without blemish, for a burnt offering.' 4Also bring a bull and a ram for peace offerings to sacrifice before the LORD, along with a grain offering mixed with oil. Do this because today the LORD will appear to you.'" 5The people brought everything Moses had commanded to the front of the Tabernacle. The entire congregation gathered and stood before the LORD. 6Moses said, "This is what the LORD has commanded you to do, and the glory of the LORD will appear to you." 7Then Moses told Aaron, "Go to the altar and present your sin offering and your burnt offering to make atonement for yourself and for the people. Then present the people's offering and make atonement for them, just as the LORD commanded." 8So Aaron went to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9His sons brought him the blood. He dipped his finger in it, applied it to the horns of the altar, and poured the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 10He burned the fat, the kidneys, and the covering of the liver from the sin offering on the altar, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 11The meat and the hide he burned with fire outside the camp. 12Next he slaughtered the burnt offering. Aaron's sons handed him the blood, and he sprinkled it all around the altar. 13They passed him the burnt offering piece by piece, along with the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14He washed the internal organs and the legs, then burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar. 15Then he brought forward the people's offering. He took the goat for the people's sin offering, slaughtered it, and offered it for sin the same way he had done with the first one. 16He presented the burnt offering and sacrificed it according to the proper procedure. 17He presented the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar — in addition to the morning's burnt offering. 18He also slaughtered the bull and the ram as peace offerings for the people. Aaron's sons handed him the blood, and he sprinkled it all around the altar. 19They also brought the fat portions from the bull and the ram — the fat tail, the fat covering the internal organs, the kidneys, and the covering of the liver. 20They placed the fat portions on top of the breast pieces, and Aaron burned the fat on the altar. 21Aaron waved the breasts and the right shoulder before the LORD as a wave offering, as Moses commanded. 22Then Aaron raised his hands toward the people and blessed them. After that, he stepped down from the altar, having finished the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offerings. 23Moses and Aaron went into the Tabernacle together. When they came back out, they blessed the people — and the glory of the LORD appeared to everyone. 24Fire blazed out from the LORD's presence and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown on the ground.
