Joshua Chosen to Lead

In the Wilderness

Numbers 27:12–23

12The LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of Abarim and look out over the land I have given to the people of Israel. 13When you have seen it, you too will join your ancestors, just as Aaron your brother did. 14This is because you both rebelled against my command in the wilderness of Zin when the community quarreled with me. You failed to honor me as holy before their eyes at the waters." These are the waters of Meribah in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin. 15Moses said to the LORD, 16Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, 17someone who will go out before them and come in before them, who will lead them out and bring them in, so the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd. 18The LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hand on him. 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire community, and commission him in front of everyone. 20And you shall give him some of your honor, so that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient. 21He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him according to the judgment of Urim before the LORD. At his word, they will go out, and at his word, they will come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, the entire congregation. 22Moses did exactly what the LORD commanded. He brought Joshua before Eleazar the priest and the whole community. 23He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the LORD had instructed through Moses.

About this event

What happened?

The LORD told Moses to go up a mountain and see the land he would give Israel. Moses would die after he saw it, as Aaron had, because of what happened at the waters of Meribah. Moses asked the LORD to appoint a man to lead the people, so they would not be like sheep without a shepherd. The LORD chose Joshua son of Nun, a man with the Spirit in him. Moses laid his hands on Joshua in front of Eleazar the priest and the people.
