The Face of Moses Shines

At Mount Sinai · Mount Sinai (Horeb)

Exodus 34:27–35

27Then the LORD told Moses, "Write down these words, because this covenant I've made with you and with Israel is based on exactly these terms." 28Moses stayed there with the LORD for 40 days and 40 nights without eating any food or drinking any water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the 10 commandments. 29When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in his hand, he didn't realize that the skin of his face was shining because he had been speaking with God. 30When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiating light, and they were afraid to go near him. 31But Moses called out to them. Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and Moses spoke with them. 32After that, all the Israelites came closer, and Moses gave them every command the LORD had spoken to him on Mount Sinai. 33And until Moses had finished speaking with them, he kept a veil on his face. 34Whenever Moses went into the LORD's presence to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came back out. Then he would tell the Israelites everything he had been commanded. 35The Israelites could see that Moses' face was glowing. So Moses would put the veil back over his face until the next time he went in to speak with the LORD.

About this event

What happened?

Moses was on the mountain with the LORD another 40 days and nights, without food or water. The words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments, were written on the tablets. When Moses came down, he did not know that his face was shining because he had spoken with the LORD. Aaron and the people were afraid to come near him. Moses called them and told them the LORD's commands. Afterward he covered his face with a veil, and he took it off whenever he went in to speak with the LORD.

Where did this happen?

Mount Sinai (Horeb)

The mountain of God in the wilderness, where God gave Israel his law. The Bible also calls it Horeb. Where it stands is not known for certain.

Where this fits

Event 8 of 10 in At Mount Sinai: God gives the Ten Commandments and his covenant. Israel worships a golden calf, and Moses pleads for them.

Good to know

God had said he would write on the new tablets (Exodus 34:1), and Deuteronomy 10:4 says the LORD wrote them. Exodus 34:28 says only “he wrote,” and readers differ on whether that means God or Moses. The KJV can read as if Moses wore the veil while he spoke; newer Bibles say he put it on afterward.
