1 Peter 5:12–13

12With the help of Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written briefly to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. 13The church that is at Babylon, chosen together with you, sends greetings; and so does Mark, my son.

About this event

What happened?

Peter wrote to believers scattered through Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia. He called himself a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings. He wrote through Silvanus, and he sent greetings from the church “in Babylon” and from “my son Mark.” In a second letter he wrote that he would soon put off his earthly tent, as the Lord Jesus had made clear to him. He wanted them to remember these things after his departure.

Who is here?

  • Silvanus
  • Mark

Where this fits

Event 1 of 1 in Peter's Letters: Peter writes to the churches as a witness of Christ's sufferings.

Good to know

Many readers take “Babylon” to mean Rome. Others take it as the city of Babylon itself. The letter does not say. Readers also differ on whether Silvanus helped write the letter or carried it, and some scholars question whether Peter wrote these letters, especially 2 Peter. The Bible does not record Peter's death.
