About this event

What happened?

At the supper, Jesus told Simon that Satan had asked to sift the disciples like wheat. “But I have prayed for you, Simon,” he said, “that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go with you even to prison and to death.” Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.”

Good to know

Matthew and Mark tell this warning after they went out to the Mount of Olives. Luke and John tell it at the supper. Readers differ on whether Jesus warned Peter once or more than once. Mark 14:30 says the rooster would crow twice.
