Introduction of Lamentations
Lamentations consists of five poetic laments mourning the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Traditionally attributed to Jeremiah, the book was written in the immediate aftermath of the Babylonian conquest. With raw grief and striking imagery, the poems give voice to the nation’s agony, confusion, and faint flickers of hope. The central figure is the devastated city of Jerusalem herself, personified as a grieving widow. These powerful dirges force readers to sit with the painful consequences of rebellion while discovering that even in the ashes, God’s compassion has not run out.
