In John 6:47 Jesus says, "whoever believes in me has everlasting life" — the object is himself, not a doctrine. Acts 16:31 answers a desperate jailer's question the same way: "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." In both cases belief is directed at someone who can be trusted, which is why James can say elsewhere that even demons believe facts about God and shudder.
Honest doubt can live alongside real belief
Mark 9:24 records a father crying out, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" — a sentence that contradicts itself and is still answered. Jesus does not send him away to work up more certainty first.
