Firstfruits meant giving from the start of a harvest, before you knew how the rest of the season would go. Honor here is measured by what you give and when you give it. God honors those who honor him, and the reverse is also true
1 Samuel 2:30 records God saying "those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be lightly esteemed." These words come as a judgment on Eli. His sons were treating the offerings with contempt, and he did nothing about it. People often quote the verse as a formula for getting ahead. Its first setting is God removing a priestly family that had dishonored him.
Christians compete at giving honor away
Romans 12:10 tells believers to be devoted to one another like family, and to "outdo one another in showing honor." Paul takes the normal human drive to be noticed and points it somewhere else. The contest he sets up is about who can be quicker to notice and praise someone else.
Honor shows up in ordinary relationships or not at all
Malachi 1:6 argues from daily life. A son honors his father and a servant honors his master. So where is God's honor from priests who despise his name? Their own reply, "How have we despised your name?", shows they had stopped noticing. Malachi answers in the next verses by pointing to the damaged animals they were bringing. The Father honors those who follow and serve Jesus
John 12:26 says "if anyone serves me, let him follow me," and promises that the Father will honor that person. Jesus says this right after describing a grain of wheat that has to fall into the ground and die. The honor he promises is real. The road to it goes through loss instead of around it.
Honor is owed widely, not only to people who deserve it
1 Peter 2:17 packs four commands into one line: "Honor everyone. Love your fellow believers. Fear God. Honor the king." Peter wrote to Christians scattered across an empire that treated them badly. Not in the way people usually quote it. In 1 Samuel 2:30 the words come inside a judgment on Eli's household. God was taking back a promise to that family because Eli's sons treated him with contempt. The verse does state something true about how God responds to honor and to contempt. It is not a tool for getting ahead at work. John 12:26 ties the Father's honor to following Jesus into sacrifice.
What does honoring God with your wealth look like now?
