- 1Here is how the descendants of Aaron were divided into groups for service. Aaron's sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
- 2Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children, so Eleazar and Ithamar carried on as priests.
- 3David organized them into divisions for their duties, with Zadok from the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.
- 4Since Eleazar's line had more leading men than Ithamar's, the divisions were split accordingly: 16 family heads from Eleazar's line and 8 from Ithamar's.
- 5They were divided by lot, one group with another, because the governors of the sanctuary and the governors of the house of God were from the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar.
- 6Shemaiah, the son of Nethaneel, a Levite scribe, recorded the assignments in the presence of the king, the officials, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the leaders of the families of the priests and Levites. One principal household was chosen from Eleazar's line and one from Ithamar's.
- 7The 1st lot went to Jehoiarib, the 2nd to Jedaiah,
- 8the 3rd to Harim, the 4th to Seorim,
- 9the 5th to Malchijah, the 6th to Mijamin,
- 10the 7th to Hakkoz, the 8th to Abijah,
- 11the 9th to Jeshua, the 10th to Shecaniah,
- 12the 11th to Eliashib, the 12th to Jakim,
- 13the 13th to Huppah, the 14th to Jeshebeab,
- 14the 15th to Bilgah, the 16th to Immer,
- 15the 17th to Hezir, the 18th to Aphses,
- 16the 19th to Pethahiah, the 20th to Jehezekel,
- 17the 21st to Jachin, the 22nd to Gamul,
- 18the 23rd to Delaiah, and the 24th to Maaziah.
- 19These were the divisions of their service to enter the house of the LORD, according to their custom, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.
- 20As for the rest of the Levites: from the descendants of Amram came Shubael, and from Shubael's descendants, Jehdeiah.
- 21Regarding Rehabiah: among the sons of Rehabiah, the first was Isshiah.
- 22From the Izharites came Shelomoth, and from Shelomoth's descendants, Jahath.
- 23The sons of Hebron were Jeriah the firstborn, Amariah the 2nd, Jahaziel the 3rd, and Jekameam the 4th.
- 24From the descendants of Uzziel came Michah, and from Michah's descendants, Shamir.
- 25Michah's brother was Isshiah, and from Isshiah's descendants came Zechariah.
- 26The descendants of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. From Jaaziah came his son Beno.
- 27Merari's descendants through Jaaziah included Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.
- 28From Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons.
- 29From Kish came his son Jerahmeel.
- 30The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the Levites listed by their family lines.
- 31Just like their relatives the descendants of Aaron, these Levites also cast lots for their assignments in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the family heads of the priests and Levites. The senior families were treated the same as the junior ones.
