- 1Now for the descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn son. Reuben was indeed the firstborn, but because he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, son of Israel. So the genealogy is not recorded according to birthright.
- 2For Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the chief ruler; but the birthright belonged to Joseph.
- 3The sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
- 4The descendants of Joel were: his son Shemaiah, then Gog, then Shimei,
- 5then Micah, then Reaia, then Baal,
- 6Beerah his son, whom Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria carried away captive; he was prince of the Reubenites.
- 7His relatives, listed by their clans in the genealogical records, were Jeiel the chief, then Zechariah,
- 8and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel. Bela lived in Aroer and as far as Nebo and Baalmeon.
- 9To the east, his territory stretched to the edge of the wilderness along the Euphrates River, because their herds had grown so large in the land of Gilead.
- 10In the days of Saul, they went to war with the Hagarites, who fell by their hand. They lived in their tents throughout the entire eastern region of Gilead.
- 11The descendants of Gad settled next to them in the land of Bashan, stretching as far as Salcah.
- 12Joel was the chief, Shapham was second, then Jaanai and Shaphat — all in Bashan.
- 13Their relatives from other branches of the family were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jachan, Zia, and Heber — 7 in all.
- 14These were the descendants of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz.
- 15Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was the head of their family.
- 16They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its surrounding towns, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon as far as their borders extended.
- 17All of these were recorded in the genealogies during the reigns of King Jotham of Judah and King Jeroboam of Israel.
- 18The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 fighting men — brave warriors trained with shields, swords, and bows, skilled and ready for battle.
- 19They went to war against the Hagarites, along with Jetur, Nephish, and Nodab.
- 20They were helped against the Hagarites, who were delivered into their hands along with all their allies, because they cried out to God during the battle, and he was moved by their plea, for they put their trust in him.
- 21They captured the enemy's livestock: 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 people.
- 22Many were killed because the war was of God. They lived in their places until the captivity.
- 23The half-tribe of Manasseh also settled in the land, spreading out from Bashan to Baalhermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon.
- 24The heads of their families were Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel. These were mighty warriors, famous men, and leaders of their clans.
- 25They transgressed against the God of their fathers and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.
- 26So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of King Pul of Assyria and the spirit of King Tilgathpilneser of Assyria, who carried away the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. They were taken to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, where they remain to this day.
