  1. 1Brothers and sisters, I don't want you to be unaware that all our ancestors were under the cloud and all passed through the sea.
  2. 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
  3. 3They all ate the same spiritual food,
  4. 4and they all drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
  5. 5Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered across the wilderness.
  6. 6These events were examples for us, so that we should not crave evil things as they did.
  7. 7Don't become idolaters like some of them were. As Scripture says, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play."
  8. 8We must not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did — and 23,000 of them died in a single day.
  9. 9We must not test Christ, as some of them did — and they were killed by serpents.
  10. 10Don't grumble, as some of them did — and they were destroyed by the destroyer.
  11. 11All of these things happened to them as examples, and they were written down as warnings for us — the people living at the end of the ages.
  12. 12So if you think you're standing firm, be careful that you don't fall.
  13. 13Every temptation you face is something others have faced too. But God is faithful — he won't let you be tempted beyond what you can handle. Along with every temptation, he will provide a way out so you can endure it.
  14. 14So then, my dear friends, run from idolatry.
  15. 15I speak to you as wise men; judge for yourselves what I say.
  16. 16When we bless the cup of blessing, isn't that a sharing in the blood of Christ? When we break the bread, isn't that a sharing in the body of Christ?
  17. 17Because there is one loaf, we who are many form one body, since we all share that one loaf.
  18. 18Consider the people of Israel: don't those who eat the sacrifices share in the altar?
  19. 19So what am I saying? That an idol is anything, or that what is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything?
  20. 20Not at all. What I'm saying is that when the Gentiles offer sacrifices, they're sacrificing to demons, not to God. And I don't want you to have any partnership with demons.
  21. 21You can't drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too. You can't eat at the Lord's table and at the table of demons.
  22. 22Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Do we think we're stronger than he is?
  23. 23All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial: all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
  24. 24Nobody should look out only for themselves. Instead, look out for the good of others.
  25. 25Eat whatever is sold at the meat market without raising questions about it for the sake of conscience,
  26. 26because "the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."
  27. 27If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you decide to go, eat whatever is put in front of you without raising questions for the sake of conscience.
  28. 28But if someone tells you, “This was offered in sacrifice to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the person who told you and for the sake of conscience. For the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.
  29. 29I'm talking about the other person's conscience, not yours. After all, why should my freedom be judged by someone else's conscience?
  30. 30If I partake by grace, why am I criticized for what I give thanks for?
  31. 31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
  32. 32Do not cause the Jews, the Gentiles, or the church of God to stumble.
  33. 33That's what I try to do. I aim to please everyone in everything, not looking out for my own benefit but for the benefit of many, so that they may be saved.
