- 1My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
- 2And he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
- 3Here's how we can be sure we truly know God: by keeping his commandments.
- 4Anyone who says, "I know God," but doesn't keep his commandments is a liar. The truth isn't in that person.
- 5But whoever keeps his word, in that person the love of God is truly perfected. This is how we know that we are in him.
- 6He who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk even as he walked.
- 7Brothers and sisters, I'm not writing you a new commandment. This is an old one — the same message you've had from the very beginning.
- 8Again, I am writing you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light is already shining.
- 9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in darkness.
- 10Whoever loves their brother or sister lives in the light, and there's nothing in them that causes stumbling.
- 11But whoever hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, not knowing where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
- 12I'm writing to you, dear children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake.
- 13I'm writing to you, fathers, because you know the one who has existed from the beginning. I'm writing to you, young people, because you have defeated the evil one. I'm writing to you, little children, because you know the Father.
- 14I've written to you, fathers, because you know the one who has existed from the beginning. I've written to you, young people, because you are strong — God's word lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
- 15Do not love the world or the things in it. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in them.
- 16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—does not come from the Father but from the world.
- 17The world is passing away, along with its lusts, but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
- 18Little children, it is the last time: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now there are many antichrists; by this we know that it is the last time.
- 19They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made clear that they were not all of us.
- 20But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
- 21I'm not writing to you because you don't know the truth. I'm writing because you do know it, and because no lie has anything to do with the truth.
- 22Who is the liar? It's the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ. That person is the Antichrist — denying both the Father and the Son.
- 23Anyone who denies the Son doesn't have the Father either. But whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father as well.
- 24So hold on to the message you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the start stays rooted in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
- 25And this is what he promised us: eternal life.
- 26I've written these things to warn you about those who are trying to lead you astray.
- 27But the anointing which you have received from him remains in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall remain in him.
- 28So now, dear children, remain in him. Then when he appears, we can stand before him with confidence and not shrink back in shame at his coming.
- 29Since you know that God is righteous, you can be sure that everyone who lives righteously has been born of him.
