- 1Abijam became king of Judah in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat's reign.
- 2He ruled in Jerusalem for 3 years. His mother's name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
- 3He committed all the sins his father had committed before him, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of his ancestor David was.
- 4Nevertheless, for David's sake, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, by raising up his son after him and establishing Jerusalem.
- 5Because David did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and never turned away from anything the LORD commanded him all his life—except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
- 6There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.
- 7The rest of Abijam's acts are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Judah. There was also war between Abijam and Jeroboam.
- 8Abijam died and was buried in the city of David. His son Asa became king after him.
- 9Asa became king of Judah during the 20th year of King Jeroboam's reign over Israel.
- 10He ruled in Jerusalem for 41 years. His mother's name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
- 11Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as David his father had done.
- 12He removed the sodomites from the land and got rid of all the idols his fathers had made.
- 13He even removed his mother Maachah from her position as queen because she had made an idol in a grove. Asa destroyed her idol and burned it by the brook Kidron.
- 14But the high places were not removed; nevertheless, Asa's heart was perfect with the LORD all his days.
- 15He brought into the house of the LORD the items his father had dedicated, along with those he himself had dedicated—silver, gold, and vessels.
- 16There was war between Asa and Baasha, king of Israel, throughout their days.
- 17Baasha, the king of Israel, went up against Judah and constructed Ramah to stop anyone from going in or out to Asa, the king of Judah.
- 18So Asa gathered all the silver and gold that remained in the treasuries of the LORD's house and in the royal palace. He handed it to his servants and sent them to Benhadad son of Tabrimon, son of Hezion, the king of Syria who lived in Damascus, with this message:
- 19"There's a treaty between us, just as there was between our fathers. I'm sending you this gift of silver and gold. Break your treaty with King Baasha of Israel so he'll pull his forces away from me."
- 20Benhadad agreed to King Asa's request. He sent his army commanders against the cities of Israel and attacked Ijon, Dan, Abelbethmaachah, and all of Cinneroth, along with the entire territory of Naphtali.
- 21When Baasha heard about it, he stopped building Ramah and lived in Tirzah.
- 22Then King Asa issued a proclamation to all of Judah — no one was exempt. The people hauled away the stones and timber that Baasha had been using to build up Ramah, and King Asa used those materials to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
- 23The rest of Asa's acts, his might, including the cities he built, are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Judah. However, in his old age, he was diseased in his feet.
- 24Asa died and was buried in the city of David his father. His son Jehoshaphat became king in his place.
- 25Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel during the 2nd year of King Asa of Judah's reign, and he ruled Israel for 2 years.
- 26He did evil in the sight of the LORD, following the ways of his father and committing the same sins that led Israel to sin.
- 27Baasha son of Ahijah, from the house of Issachar, plotted against him. Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging Gibbethon.
- 28Baasha killed him during the 3rd year of King Asa of Judah's reign and took the throne for himself.
- 29When Baasha became king, he struck down all the house of Jeroboam; he left not a single one who breathed, until he had destroyed him, according to the word the LORD had spoken through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite.
- 30This happened because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.
- 31Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
- 32Asa and King Baasha of Israel were at war with each other the entire time they both reigned.
- 33Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel during the 3rd year of King Asa of Judah's reign. He ruled from Tirzah for 24 years.
- 34He did evil in the sight of the LORD, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sins that led Israel to sin.
