  1. 1Around that time, Jeroboam's son Abijah became sick.
  2. 2Jeroboam said to his wife, "Please get up and disguise yourself so no one will know you are my wife. Go to Shiloh, where the prophet Ahijah is. He is the one who told me I would become king over this people."
  3. 3Take ten loaves of bread, some cracknels, and a jar of honey with you. Go to him, and he will tell you what will happen to the child.
  4. 4Jeroboam's wife did as he said. She got up and traveled to Shiloh, arriving at Ahijah's house. Ahijah could not see because his eyes were fixed due to his old age.
  5. 5But the LORD told Ahijah, 'Jeroboam's wife is coming to ask you about her son, who is sick. You shall say this and that to her, for when she arrives, she will pretend to be another woman.'
  6. 6So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he called out, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you pretending to be someone else? I've been sent to you with heavy tidings."
  7. 7Go back and tell Jeroboam that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I lifted you up from among the people and made you prince over my people Israel.'
  8. 8I tore the kingdom away from David's family and gave it to you. But you haven't been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes.
  9. 9Instead, you've done more evil than anyone who came before you. You made other gods for yourself—metal idols—to provoke my anger, and you've cast me behind your back.
  10. 10So I will bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam. I will cut off every male from Jeroboam, both slave and free in Israel. I will sweep away what remains of Jeroboam's house as one clears away dung, until it is all gone.
  11. 11Anyone from your family who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and anyone who dies in the open country will be eaten by birds. The LORD has spoken.'"
  12. 12"Now get up and go home. The moment your feet step into the city, your child will die.
  13. 13All Israel will mourn for him and bury him, because he alone among Jeroboam's family will be buried, for something good toward the LORD God of Israel has been found in him within Jeroboam's family.
  14. 14The LORD will raise up a king over Israel who will cut off Jeroboam's family that day. But what? Even now.
  15. 15The LORD will strike Israel, making it sway like a reed in the water. He will uproot Israel from this good land he gave to their ancestors and scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking the LORD to anger.
  16. 16He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who sinned and made Israel sin.
  17. 17Jeroboam's wife got up and left, traveling back to Tirzah. The moment she stepped across the threshold of her house, the child died.
  18. 18They buried him, and all of Israel mourned for him, just as the LORD had said through his servant the prophet Ahijah.
  19. 19The rest of Jeroboam's acts, including his wars and how he reigned, are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
  20. 20Jeroboam reigned for 22 years, and then he slept with his fathers. His son Nadab reigned in his place.
  21. 21Meanwhile, Solomon's son Rehoboam was ruling in Judah. He was 41 years old when he became king, and he reigned for 17 years in Jerusalem — the city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel as the place for his name. His mother was Naamah, an Ammonitess.
  22. 22Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and their sins provoked him to jealousy more than anything their ancestors had done.
  23. 23For they also built high places, images, and groves on every high hill and under every green tree.
  24. 24And there were also sodomites in the land, and they followed all the abominations of the nations which the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
  25. 25In the 5th year of King Rehoboam's reign, King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem.
  26. 26He carried off the treasures from the LORD's temple and the royal palace — he took everything, including all the gold shields Solomon had made.
  27. 27King Rehoboam replaced them with bronze shields and put them in the care of the captains of the royal guard who protected the entrance to the palace.
  28. 28Whenever the king went to the LORD's temple, the guards would carry the shields and then return them to the guardroom afterward.
  29. 29Now, aren't the rest of Rehoboam's acts and all that he did written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
  30. 30Rehoboam and Jeroboam were at war with each other the entire time they both reigned.
  31. 31Rehoboam died and was buried in the city of David. His mother's name was Naamah, an Ammonitess. His son Abijam became king after him.
