  1. 1Elijah the Tishbite, from the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there will be no dew or rain these years, except at my word."
  2. 2Then the LORD spoke to Elijah:
  3. 3"Leave this place. Head east and hide by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.
  4. 4You'll drink from the brook, and I've commanded ravens to bring you food there."
  5. 5Elijah did exactly what the LORD told him. He went and stayed by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.
  6. 6Every morning and evening, the ravens brought him bread and meat, and he drank from the brook.
  7. 7But after some time, the brook dried up because there had been no rain anywhere in the land.
  8. 8Then the LORD spoke to him again:
  9. 9Get up, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Look, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.
  10. 10So Elijah got up and traveled to Zarephath. When he arrived at the town gate, he saw a widow gathering sticks. He called out to her, "Please, could you bring me a little water in a jar so I can have a drink?"
  11. 11As she turned to go get it, he called after her, "And please bring me a small piece of bread too."
  12. 12She replied, "As the LORD your God lives, I don't have a cake—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I'm gathering a couple of sticks so I can go and prepare it for my son and me. After we eat it, we will die."
  13. 13Elijah told her, "Don't be afraid. Go ahead and do what you planned, but first make a small loaf for me and bring it out. After that, make something for yourself and your son.
  14. 14For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not run out, and the jug of oil will not run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.'
  15. 15She went and did what Elijah said, and she, Elijah, and her household had food to eat for many days.
  16. 16The jar of flour did not run out, and the jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke through Elijah.
  17. 17After these events, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick. His illness was so severe that he stopped breathing.
  18. 18And she said to Elijah, "What do I have to do with you, man of God? Have you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?"
  19. 19Elijah said to her, "Give me your son." He took the boy from her arms, carried him upstairs to the room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
  20. 20Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you also brought evil upon this widow who has taken me in, by slaying her son?"
  21. 21He stretched his body over the child three times and cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, please let this child's soul return to him!"
  22. 22The LORD heard Elijah's prayer. The child's soul came back into him, and he came back to life.
  23. 23Elijah picked up the boy, carried him downstairs from the upper room, and placed him in his mother's arms. "Look," Elijah said, "your son is alive!"
  24. 24The woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is truth."
