- 1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
- 2Chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
- 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his abundant mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
- 4To an inheritance that can never decay, never be corrupted, and never fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
- 5Through faith, you are kept by God's power for salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time.
- 6In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you are distressed by various trials:
- 7These trials test your faith, which is much more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, so that it may result in praise, honor, and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
- 8You love him even though you haven't seen him; and even now, though you don't see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
- 9Receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
- 10The prophets diligently inquired and searched about this salvation, as they prophesied of the grace that was to come to you.
- 11They tried to discover who and what time period the Spirit of Christ within them was pointing to when it revealed in advance the sufferings of Christ and the glory that would follow.
- 12To them it was revealed that not to themselves, but to us, they ministered the things which are now reported to you by those who have preached the gospel to you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
- 13Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- 14As obedient children, do not shape your lives according to the former lusts in your ignorance.
- 15Instead, be holy in everything you do, just as the one who called you is holy.
- 16For Scripture says, "Be holy, because I am holy."
- 17And if you call on the Father, who judges each person's work without partiality, spend your time here as sojourners in fear.
- 18You know that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from the empty way of life handed down to you by your ancestors.
- 19No — you were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, like a lamb without any blemish or defect.
- 20Who truly was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for you,
- 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.
- 22Now that you've purified your souls by obeying the truth through the Spirit, resulting in genuine love for your brothers and sisters, love each other fervently with a pure heart.
- 23You have been born again — not from a seed that decays, but from one that is imperishable — through the living and enduring word of God.
- 24For all flesh is like grass, and all the glory of man is like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls away,
- 25but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached to you.
