  1. 1Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we decided it was best to remain in Athens alone.
  2. 2and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen you and encourage you concerning your faith,
  3. 3so that none of you would be shaken by these hardships, for you know that we are destined for this.
  4. 4Even when we were still with you, we warned you that we would face persecution — and that's exactly what happened, as you well know.
  5. 5For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to learn about your faith. I feared that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our efforts might have been in vain.
  6. 6But now that Timothy has come to us from you, he has brought us good news about your faith and love. He told us that you always remember us fondly and greatly desire to see us, just as we also desire to see you.
  7. 7Therefore, brothers and sisters, your faith has been a great comfort to us in all our troubles and hardships.
  8. 8For now we live, if you stand firm in the Lord.
  9. 9How can we thank God enough for you, for all the joy we have because of you before our God?
  10. 10Night and day we pray earnestly that we might see you face to face and complete what is lacking in your faith.
  11. 11May God our Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, clear the way for us to come to you.
  12. 12And may the Lord cause your love to grow and overflow — love for each other and for everyone — just as our love overflows for you.
  13. 13May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his saints.
