- 1Abijah slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David. His son Asa became king in his place, and the land was quiet for ten years.
- 2Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.
- 3He removed the altars of the foreign gods and the high places, broke down the images, and cut down the groves.
- 4He commanded the people of Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and to obey the law and the commandment.
- 5He also removed the high places and the images from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was quiet under his rule.
- 6He built fortified cities throughout Judah, because the land was at rest and there was no war during those years; the LORD had given him rest.
- 7He said to Judah, "Let us build these cities and make walls, towers, gates, and bars around them while the land is yet before us. Because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side." So they built and prospered.
- 8Asa's army included 300,000 men from Judah armed with large shields and spears, and 280,000 from Benjamin armed with small shields and bows. All these were mighty men of valor.
- 9Then Zerah the Ethiopian marched against them with an army of 1,000,000 troops and 300 chariots, advancing as far as Mareshah.
- 10Asa went out to meet him, and the two armies lined up for battle in the valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.
- 11Asa cried to the LORD his God and said, "LORD, it is nothing with you to help, whether with many, or with those who have no power. Help us, LORD our God, for we rest on you, and in your name we go against this multitude. LORD, you are our God. Do not let man prevail against you."
- 12The LORD struck down the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.
- 13Asa and his army chased them all the way to Gerar. So many Ethiopians fell that they couldn't regroup — they were crushed before the LORD and his forces. Judah's army carried off an enormous amount of plunder.
- 14They attacked all the cities around Gerar, because the fear of the LORD had fallen on everyone there. They looted every city, since there was an incredible amount of wealth in them.
- 15They also raided the camps where livestock was kept, carrying off huge numbers of sheep and camels before returning to Jerusalem.
