- 1The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded.
- 2He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa, and all of Judah and Benjamin! The LORD is with you as long as you are with him. If you seek him, he will let you find him. But if you abandon him, he will abandon you."
- 3"For a long time, Israel lived without the true God, without a priest to teach them, and without the law."
- 4"But whenever they were in trouble and turned back to the LORD, the God of Israel, and searched for him, he let them find him."
- 5In those times, there was no peace for anyone going out or coming in, but great troubles were upon all the inhabitants of the lands.
- 6Nation was destroyed by nation, and city by city, because God troubled them with all kinds of adversity.
- 7"So be strong! Don't give up, because your work will be rewarded."
- 8When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and from the cities he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. Then he restored the altar of the LORD that stood in front of the LORD's temple porch.
- 9He assembled everyone from Judah and Benjamin, along with the strangers from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who had settled among them. Large numbers had come over to him from Israel because they could see that the LORD his God was with him.
- 10They all gathered in Jerusalem in the 3rd month of the 15th year of Asa's reign.
- 11That day they sacrificed to the LORD from the plunder they had brought back — 700 cattle and 7,000 sheep.
- 12They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and all their soul.
- 13Anyone who refused to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, would be put to death — whether young or old, man or woman.
- 14They swore their oath to the LORD with a loud voice, with shouts of joy, and with the blast of trumpets and horns.
- 15All of Judah celebrated the oath, because they had sworn it with all their heart and searched for God with everything they had — and he let them find him. So the LORD gave them peace on every side.
- 16King Asa also removed his mother Maachah from her position as queen because she had made an idol in a grove. Asa cut down her idol, stamped on it, and burned it at the brook Kidron.
- 17But the high places were not taken away out of Israel; nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.
- 18He brought into the house of God all the silver, gold, and vessels that his father had dedicated, along with everything he himself had dedicated.
- 19There was no more war until the 35th year of Asa's reign.
