- 1Jehoshaphat succeeded his father as king and strengthened his position against Israel.
- 2He stationed troops in every fortified city of Judah and placed garrisons throughout the land of Judah, as well as in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.
- 3The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the early ways of his father David and did not seek after the Baals.
- 4Instead, he sought the LORD God of his father and followed His commandments rather than imitating the practices of Israel.
- 5Because of this, the LORD established the kingdom firmly under his control. All of Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, and he gained enormous wealth and honor.
- 6His heart was exalted in the ways of the LORD. He also removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.
- 7In the third year of his reign, he sent out his officials — Benhail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethaneel, and Michaiah — to teach throughout the cities of Judah.
- 8With them he sent the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, along with the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
- 9They taught in Judah, carrying the book of the law of the LORD with them, and traveled throughout all the cities of Judah, teaching the people.
- 10The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms in the lands surrounding Judah, so they made no war against Jehoshaphat.
- 11Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute. The Arabians also brought him flocks — 7,700 rams and 7,700 male goats.
- 12Jehoshaphat grew increasingly powerful. He built castles and supply cities throughout Judah.
- 13He had much business in the cities of Judah, and the men of war, mighty men of valor, were in Jerusalem.
- 14Here is the count of his forces, organized by their ancestral clans: From Judah, the commanders of thousands — Adnah was the chief commander, with 300,000 mighty warriors under him.
- 15Next was the commander Jehohanan, with 280,000 men under him.
- 16Next was Amasiah son of Zichri, who had volunteered himself for the LORD's service, with 200,000 mighty warriors under him.
- 17From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty warrior, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields.
- 18Next was Jehozabad, with 180,000 men trained and ready for battle.
- 19These were the forces that served the king directly, in addition to those he had stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
