  1. 1In the 36th year of Asa's reign, King Baasha of Israel came up against Judah and built Ramah, intending to prevent anyone from going out or coming in to Asa, king of Judah.
  2. 2In response, Asa took silver and gold from the treasuries of the LORD's temple and the royal palace and sent them to Benhadad, the king of Syria, who lived in Damascus. His message said,
  3. 3There is a treaty between us, as there was between my father and your father. Look, I have sent you silver and gold; go, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he may leave me.
  4. 4Benhadad agreed to Asa's request and sent his army commanders to attack Israel's cities. They struck Ijon, Dan, Abelmaim, and all the supply cities throughout the territory of Naphtali.
  5. 5When Baasha got word of this, he abandoned his construction at Ramah and halted the project entirely.
  6. 6Then King Asa mobilized all of Judah, and they hauled away the stones and timber Baasha had been using to build up Ramah. Asa used those materials to fortify Geba and Mizpah instead.
  7. 7Around that time, Hanani the seer came to King Asa of Judah and told him, "Because you relied on the king of Syria instead of the LORD your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your grasp."
  8. 8Remember the Ethiopians and the Lubims? They came at you with a massive army — chariots and horsemen beyond counting. But because you relied on the LORD, he handed them over to you.
  9. 9The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth to show himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward him. You have acted foolishly in this matter, and from now on you will have wars.
  10. 10Then Asa was furious with the seer and put him in prison because he was in a rage over this matter. At the same time, Asa oppressed some of the people.
  11. 11Look, the acts of Asa, first and last—look, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
  12. 12In the 39th year of his reign, Asa developed a severe disease in his feet that grew worse and worse. Yet even in his illness, he didn't turn to the LORD for help — only to his doctors.
  13. 13Asa slept with his fathers and died in the 41st year of his reign.
  14. 14They buried him in the tomb he had made for himself in the city of David. They laid him on a bed filled with sweet odours and various spices prepared by skilled perfumers, and they made a very great burning for him.
