  1. 1Jehoshaphat died and was buried with his ancestors in the city of David. His son Jehoram became king after him.
  2. 2Jehoram had several brothers — other sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah. All of them were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.
  3. 3Their father had given them generous gifts of silver, gold, and other valuable things, along with fortified cities in Judah. But he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn.
  4. 4Once Jehoram had established himself as king over his father's kingdom, he killed all of his brothers with the sword, along with some of the officials of Israel.
  5. 5Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 8 years.
  6. 6He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab did, because he had Ahab's daughter as his wife. He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD.
  7. 7Even so, the LORD refused to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant he had made with David. He had promised to keep a light burning for David and his descendants forever.
  8. 8During Jehoram's reign, Edom rebelled against Judah's control and set up their own king.
  9. 9Jehoram marched out with his commanders and all his chariots. He launched a night attack and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him, along with their chariot commanders.
  10. 10But Edom has remained free from Judah's control to this day. Around the same time, Libnah also revolted against Jehoram's rule — all because he had abandoned the LORD, the God of his ancestors.
  11. 11He also made high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto.
  12. 12Then a letter arrived from Elijah the prophet. It said: "This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David, says: 'You have not followed the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or the ways of King Asa of Judah.
  13. 13But you have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into whoredom, like the whoredoms of the house of Ahab. You have also killed your own brothers, your father's sons, who were better than you.
  14. 14Because of this, the LORD is going to strike your people, your children, your wives, and everything you own with a devastating plague.
  15. 15You yourself will suffer from a severe disease of your intestines. It will grow worse day after day until your bowels come out because of the illness.'"
  16. 16The LORD stirred up the spirit of the Philistines and the Arabs who lived near the Ethiopians against Jehoram.
  17. 17They invaded Judah, broke through its defenses, and carried off everything of value they found in the king's palace — including his sons and his wives. The only son left to him was Jehoahaz, his youngest.
  18. 18After all of this, the LORD struck Jehoram with an incurable disease of his intestines.
  19. 19As time went on, after about 2 years, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in terrible agony. His people didn't make a ceremonial fire in his honor the way they had done for his ancestors.
  20. 20He was 32 years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 8 years. He died without being missed. They buried him in the city of David, but not in the royal tombs.
