- 1The people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, Jehoram's youngest son, king in his place, because the raiders who had come with the Arabians into the camp had killed all of his older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.
- 2Ahaziah was 42 years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 1 year. His mother's name was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri.
- 3He followed the ways of Ahab's family, because his mother was his advisor in doing wickedly.
- 4So he did evil in the sight of the LORD, like the house of Ahab, because after his father's death, they were his counselors, leading to his destruction.
- 5Following their advice, he joined Jehoram, the son of Ahab and king of Israel, in a military campaign against Hazael, king of Syria, at Ramothgilead. The Syrians wounded Joram.
- 6He returned to Jezreel to be healed of the wounds given him at Ramah when he fought with Hazael king of Syria. Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel, because he was sick.
- 7God brought about Ahaziah's downfall through this visit to Joram. When Ahaziah arrived, he went out with Joram to confront Jehu, the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.
- 8While Jehu was executing judgment on Ahab's family, he found the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah's brothers who served Ahaziah, and he killed them.
- 9Jehu searched for Ahaziah, and they found him hiding in Samaria. They captured him and brought him to Jehu, and when they had killed him, they buried him, saying, 'He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.' So the house of Ahaziah had no power to retain the kingdom.
- 10When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and killed all the royal heirs of the house of Judah.
- 11But Jehoshabeath, the king's daughter, took Ahaziah's son Joash and stole him away from among the king's sons who were slain. She placed him and his nurse in a bedroom. Jehoshabeath, who was King Jehoram's daughter, Ahaziah's sister, and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, hid him from Athaliah so she could not kill him.
- 12Joash remained hidden with them in the house of God for 6 years while Athaliah ruled the land.
