- 1Amaziah was 25 years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 29 years. His mother's name was Jehoaddan, and she was from Jerusalem.
- 2He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
- 3Once the kingdom was firmly in his control, he killed the servants who had killed his father the king.
- 4However, he didn't put their children to death. He followed what was written in the Law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, "Fathers must not be executed for their children's sins, and children must not be executed for their fathers' sins. Each person must die for their own sin."
- 5Amaziah assembled all of Judah and Benjamin and organized them by family clans under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. He counted every man 20 years old and older and found 300,000 trained soldiers ready for battle, skilled with spear and shield.
- 6He also hired 100,000 experienced warriors from Israel for 100 talents of silver.
- 7But a man of God came to him and said, "Your Majesty, don't let the Israelite army go with you. The LORD is not with Israel — not with any of the people of Ephraim.
- 8But if you decide to go, then be strong for the battle: God will make you fall before the enemy, for God has the power to help and to bring down.
- 9Amaziah asked the man of God, "But what about the 100 talents of silver I already paid the Israelite troops?" The man of God replied, "The LORD is able to give you far more than that."
- 10So Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come from Ephraim and sent them home. They were furious with Judah and left in a rage.
- 11Amaziah gathered his courage, led his army out, and marched to the Valley of Salt, where he struck down 10,000 men of Seir.
- 12The men of Judah also captured 10,000 alive, took them to the top of a cliff, and threw them off so that they were all broken in pieces.
- 13Meanwhile, the Israelite soldiers Amaziah had sent home — the ones he wouldn't let fight alongside him — raided the towns of Judah from Samaria all the way to Beth Horon. They killed 3,000 people and carried off a huge amount of plunder.
- 14After Amaziah returned from his slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir, set them up as his own gods, bowed down before them, and burned incense to them.
- 15The LORD's anger burned against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him. The prophet asked, "Why have you gone chasing after the gods of a people who couldn't even save themselves from your hand?"
- 16While the prophet was speaking, the king interrupted him, saying, "Are you one of the king's advisors? Stop, or why should you be struck down?" The prophet stopped and said, "I know that God has decided to destroy you because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel."
- 17Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us see one another in the face."
- 18King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "A thistle in Lebanon once sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter in marriage to my son.' But a wild animal came along and trampled the thistle flat.
- 19You say, 'Look, you have defeated the Edomites,' and your heart is lifted up to boast. Stay at home now; why should you bring trouble on yourself and Judah that will lead to your downfall?
- 20But Amaziah would not listen, for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
- 21So King Joash of Israel marched out, and he and King Amaziah of Judah faced each other in battle at Beth Shemesh, a town in Judah.
- 22Judah was worsted by Israel, and every man fled to his tent.
- 23King Joash of Israel captured King Amaziah of Judah, son of Joash and grandson of Jehoahaz, right there at Beth Shemesh. He brought him back to Jerusalem and tore down 400 cubits of Jerusalem's wall, from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate.
- 24He seized all the gold and silver and every vessel found in God's house that was in the care of Obed-Edom, along with the treasures from the royal palace. He also took hostages, then returned to Samaria.
- 25Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived for 15 years after the death of King Joash son of Jehoahaz of Israel.
- 26The rest of Amaziah's acts, from beginning to end, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
- 27From the time Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, conspirators plotted against him in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there.
- 28They brought his body back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the city of Judah.
