- 1From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and from Timothy our brother — to the church of God in Corinth, along with all the saints throughout Achaia:
- 2May grace and peace be yours from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
- 4He comforts us in every hardship we face, so that we can comfort others going through any kind of trouble — using the same comfort God has given us.
- 5For as the sufferings of Christ overflow in us, so our comfort also overflows through Christ.
- 6When we suffer, it is for your comfort and salvation, which is effective as you endure the same sufferings we experience. When we are comforted, it is for your comfort and salvation.
- 7Our hope for you is rock-solid, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, you'll also share in our comfort.
- 8Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the trouble we faced in Asia. We were pressed beyond measure, above our strength, to the point that we despaired even of life.
- 9Indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves, so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead.
- 10He delivered us from such a great death and continues to deliver us. We trust in him that he will deliver us again.
- 11And you're helping us by praying for us! That way, when God answers the prayers of so many people on our behalf, many will give thanks to him for the gift he's given us.
- 12Here's what we're proud of, and our conscience backs it up: we've conducted ourselves in this world — and especially toward you — with simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but through the grace of God.
- 13We aren't writing anything to you that you can't read and understand. I'm confident you'll fully grasp what we mean,
- 14just as you've already partly understood that we are your reason to be proud, and you are ours — on the day of the Lord Jesus.
- 15With this confidence, I planned to visit you earlier so you might have a second benefit.
- 16My plan was to visit you on my way to Macedonia, then come back to you from Macedonia, and have you help me on my way to Judaea.
- 17When I planned this, was I using lightness? Or do I purpose according to the flesh, so that with me there should be “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?
- 18As surely as God is faithful, our message to you has never been 'yes' and 'no' at the same time.
- 19The Son of God, Jesus Christ — the one Silvanus, Timothy, and I proclaimed to you — was never 'yes' and 'no.' In him, it has always been 'Yes.'
- 20For all the promises of God in him are “Yes,” and in him “Amen,” to the glory of God through us.
- 21It is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He is the one who anointed us,
- 22who has also sealed us and given the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
- 23I call God as a witness upon my soul, that the reason I haven't come to Corinth yet is to spare you.
- 24We're not trying to control your faith. Instead, we're working alongside you for your joy, because you already stand firm in faith.
