- 1But I decided within myself that I would not visit you again in sorrow.
- 2After all, if I cause you grief, who's left to bring me joy? Only the very people I've hurt.
- 3I wrote this same thing to you so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who should make me rejoice. I have confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all.
- 4For I wrote to you out of much distress and anguish of heart, with many tears—not to cause you grief, but so you would know the love I have more abundantly for you.
- 5But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but to some extent—not to be too severe on all of you.
- 6The punishment the majority of you imposed on this person has been enough.
- 7So now it's time to do the opposite — forgive him and encourage him. Otherwise, he could be crushed by too much grief.
- 8Therefore, I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.
- 9This was actually one of the reasons I wrote — to test you and see whether you'd follow through and be obedient in every way.
- 10When you forgive someone, I forgive them too. And whatever I've forgiven — if there was anything to forgive — I did it for your sake, in the person of Christ.
- 11So that Satan does not gain an advantage over us, for we are not unaware of his schemes.
- 12When I arrived in Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, a door was opened for me by the Lord.
- 13I had no rest in my spirit because I did not find my brother Titus. But after saying goodbye to them, I went to Macedonia.
- 14Now thanks be to God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ and makes the fragrance of his knowledge known through us in every place.
- 15For we are a sweet aroma of Christ to God among those who are saved and those who perish:
- 16To the one, we are the aroma of death leading to death; and to the other, the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?
- 17For we are not like many who distort the word of God. Instead, we speak with sincerity, as from God, in the sight of God, in Christ.
