- 1I, Paul, personally appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. When I am with you, I am humble, but when I am away, I am bold toward you.
- 2I'm asking you: please don't force me to be as bold in person as I'm prepared to be against those who accuse us of living by worldly motives.
- 3For though we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh.
- 4The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but are mighty through God for pulling down strongholds.
- 5We tear down imaginations and every arrogant idea that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.
- 6And being ready to punish all disobedience, once your obedience is complete.
- 7You're judging by appearances! If anyone is convinced that they belong to Christ, they need to think again — because we belong to Christ just as much as they do.
- 8For even if I boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave us for building you up and not for your destruction, I will not be ashamed.
- 9I don't want it to seem like I'm just trying to scare you with my letters.
- 10For they say, "His letters are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is contemptible."
- 11Anyone who says that should understand this: what we say in our letters when we're away is exactly what we'll do when we show up in person.
- 12We wouldn't dare put ourselves in the same category as those who promote themselves, or compare ourselves to them. When they measure themselves by their own standards and compare themselves only with each other, they are not wise.
- 13We won't boast beyond what's appropriate. Instead, we'll stay within the boundaries of the work God assigned to us — and that work includes reaching you.
- 14We are not reaching beyond our proper limits, as if we had not reached you, for we came as far as you in preaching the gospel of Christ:
- 15We don't take credit for work that others have done. Instead, we hope that as your faith grows, we will be greatly enlarged by you according to our measure.
- 16to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you and not boast about work already completed in someone else’s area.
- 17But whoever boasts, let that person boast in the Lord.
- 18For it is not the person who commends themselves who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
