- 1Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from every impurity of flesh and spirit, making holiness complete in the fear of God.
- 2Make room for us in your hearts. We haven't wronged anyone, we haven't led anyone astray, and we haven't taken advantage of anyone.
- 3I'm not saying this to condemn you. As I've said before, you are in our hearts, and we would live or die with you.
- 4I speak to you with great confidence and boast about you greatly. I am filled with comfort and am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulations.
- 5When we arrived in Macedonia, we couldn't find a moment's rest. Trouble hit us from every direction — conflicts on the outside, fears on the inside.
- 6But God, who comforts those who are cast down, comforted us through the arrival of Titus.
- 7It wasn't just his arrival that lifted our spirits — it was the encouragement he had received from you. He told us how much you longed to see us, how deeply you grieved, and how passionately you cared about me. That made me even more joyful.
- 8Even though my letter caused you pain, I don't regret sending it — though I did for a while. I can see that the letter hurt you, but only for a short time.
- 9Now I rejoice, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led to repentance. You were made sorry in a godly way, so that you were not harmed by us in any way.
- 10Godly sorrow leads to repentance and salvation, which is not to be regretted. But the sorrow of the world leads to death.
- 11Look at this very thing: your sorrow in a godly way produced such earnest care in you—yes, such clearing of yourselves, indignation, fear, deep desire, zeal, and revenge! In everything you have shown yourselves to be clear in this matter.
- 12So when I wrote to you, it wasn't for the sake of the one who did wrong or the one who was wronged, but so that our care for you in the sight of God might be made clear to you.
- 13That's why we were so encouraged. On top of our own encouragement, we were even more thrilled by how happy Titus was, because all of you had refreshed his spirit.
- 14I had bragged about you to Titus, and you didn't let me down. Everything we've ever told you has been true, and what I boasted about you to Titus turned out to be true as well.
- 15His deep affection for you grows even stronger as he remembers how obedient you all were and how you received him with fear and trembling.
- 16It fills me with joy that I can have complete confidence in you in every way.
