  1. 1After Ahab died, the nation of Moab rebelled against Israel.
  2. 2Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper room in Samaria and became sick. He sent messengers and instructed them, 'Go inquire of Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this illness.'
  3. 3But the angel of the LORD spoke to Elijah the Tishbite: "Go intercept the king of Samaria's messengers and say to them, 'Is there no God in Israel? Is that why you're going to consult Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?'
  4. 4Now therefore, the LORD says: 'You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. You will surely die.' Then Elijah left.
  5. 5When the messengers returned to him, he asked them, "Why have you come back?"
  6. 6They told him, "A man met us on the road and said, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him this: The LORD says, "Is there no God in Israel, that you're sending people to consult Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Because of this, you will never get up from the bed you're lying on. You will surely die."'"
  7. 7Ahaziah asked them, "What did this man look like — the one who met you and said these things?"
  8. 8They answered, "He was a hairy man with a leather belt around his waist." The king said, "That's Elijah the Tishbite."
  9. 9Then the king sent a captain with fifty soldiers to him. The captain went up to him and found him sitting on top of a hill. He said to him, 'Man of God, the king has said, Come down.'
  10. 10Elijah answered the captain of 50, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your 50." Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his 50.
  11. 11The king sent another captain with 50 more soldiers. This captain called up, "Man of God, the king says, 'Come down right now!'"
  12. 12Elijah answered them, "If I really am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your 50 men." Again, God's fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and all his soldiers.
  13. 13He again sent a captain of a third 50 with his 50. The third captain went up, came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him, "Man of God, please let my life and the life of these 50 servants of yours be precious in your sight."
  14. 14"Fire came down from heaven and destroyed the first 2 captains and all their men. But please, let my life be precious in your sight."
  15. 15The angel of the LORD told Elijah, "Go down with him. Don't be afraid of him." So Elijah got up and went with the captain to see the king.
  16. 16Elijah said to Ahaziah, "This is what the LORD says: 'Since you sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? Therefore, you will not get up from the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.'"
  17. 17Ahaziah died, just as the LORD had spoken through Elijah. Since Ahaziah had no son, Jehoram succeeded him as king. This happened during the 2nd year of King Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat of Judah's reign.
  18. 18The rest of Ahaziah's acts, what he did, are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
