  1. 1Jehoash became king during the 7th year of Jehu's reign, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 40 years. His mother's name was Zibiah, from Beersheba.
  2. 2Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the LORD all the days Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
  3. 3But the high places were not removed: the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense at the high places.
  4. 4Jehoash told the priests, "All the money from the dedicated things brought into the house of the LORD, including the money from those who are counted, the money each person is assessed, and all the money anyone chooses to bring into the house of the LORD,
  5. 5The priests should take it from the people they know, each priest from his own acquaintances, and they should repair any damage to the house wherever it is found.
  6. 6But by the 23rd year of King Jehoash's reign, the priests still hadn't made any repairs to the temple.
  7. 7So King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and said to them, "Why haven't you repaired the damage to the temple? From now on, stop collecting money from your acquaintances and give it for the temple repairs."
  8. 8The priests agreed — they would no longer collect money from the people, and they would no longer be responsible for the repairs.
  9. 9Jehoiada the priest took a chest, drilled a hole in its lid, and placed it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of the LORD. The priests who guarded the entrance put all the money brought into the house of the LORD into this chest.
  10. 10When they saw there was much money in the chest, the king's secretary and the high priest came up, put the money in bags, and counted all that was found in the house of the LORD.
  11. 11Then they handed the counted money over to the supervisors in charge of the work on the LORD's house. Those supervisors paid the carpenters and builders working on the temple,
  12. 12as well as the masons and stonecutters. They also used it to buy timber and cut stone — covering every expense needed to repair the house of the LORD.
  13. 13However, none of the money brought into the LORD's house was used to make silver bowls, wick trimmers, basins, trumpets, or any gold or silver items for the temple.
  14. 14All of it went directly to the workers to repair the house of the LORD.
  15. 15No one required an accounting from the men who received the money to pay the workmen, because they dealt faithfully.
  16. 16Money from guilt offerings and sin offerings was not put into the LORD's house — that money belonged to the priests.
  17. 17Then Hazael, king of Syria, went up and fought against Gath, capturing it. Afterward, Hazael set his sights on going up to Jerusalem.
  18. 18King Jehoash of Judah gathered up all the sacred items that his ancestors — Kings Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah of Judah — had dedicated, along with his own sacred gifts and all the gold found in the treasuries of the LORD's house and the royal palace. He sent everything to Hazael king of Syria, and Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.
  19. 19The rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
  20. 20His own officials formed a conspiracy and killed Joash at the house of Millo, on the road going down to Silla.
  21. 21The assassins were his servants Jozachar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. After he died, they buried him with his ancestors in the city of David, and his son Amaziah became king in his place.
