- 1When Ishbosheth, Saul's son, heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands became weak, and all the Israelites were troubled.
- 2Ishbosheth had two men who were captains of raiding parties: Baanah and Rechab, sons of Rimmon from Beeroth, of the children of Benjamin, since Beeroth was also considered part of Benjamin.
- 3The people of Beeroth fled to Gittaim and have lived there as sojourners to this day.
- 4Now Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son named Mephibosheth who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to escape, he fell and became lame.
- 5Rechab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, went to Ishbosheth's house during the heat of the day, while he was lying down for his midday rest.
- 6They slipped inside, pretending they had come to get wheat, and stabbed him in the stomach. Then Rechab and his brother Baanah escaped.
- 7They had entered the house while he was lying on his bed in his bedroom. They struck him down, killed him, and cut off his head. Taking his head with them, they traveled through the Jordan Valley all night.
- 8They brought Ishbosheth's head to David in Hebron and said to the king, "Here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. Today the LORD has avenged my lord the king against Saul and his descendants."
- 9David answered Rechab and his brother Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, "As surely as the LORD lives, who has rescued my soul from every trouble,"
- 10When a man came to me in Ziklag and said, 'Saul is dead,' thinking he was bringing good news, I seized him and killed him. He thought I would reward him for his news.
- 11How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous person in his own house on his bed, will I not therefore now demand his blood from your hand and take you away from the earth?
- 12David gave the order to his soldiers, and they killed Rechab and Baanah, cut off their hands and feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. As for Ishbosheth's head, they buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.
