- 1You are the children of the LORD your God. Don't cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads as a way of mourning the dead.
- 2You are a people set apart as holy to the LORD your God. Out of every nation on earth, the LORD chose you to be his own treasured people.
- 3Do not eat anything that is abominable.
- 4Here are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat,
- 5the hart, the roebuck, the fallow deer, the wild goat, the pygarg, the wild ox, and the chamois.
- 6You may eat any animal that has hooves completely divided in two and also brings its food back up from its stomach to chew it again.
- 7However, some animals only meet one of those requirements, and you must not eat them. The camel, the hare, and the rock badger all bring their food back up to chew it again, but their hooves are not completely divided — so they are unclean for you.
- 8Pigs are also unclean for you, because even though their hooves are divided, they don't bring their food back up to chew it again. Don't eat their meat, and don't even touch their dead bodies.
- 9When it comes to creatures that live in water, you may eat anything that has both fins and scales.
- 10But if it doesn't have fins and scales, don't eat it. It is unclean for you.
- 11You may eat any bird that is clean.
- 12But here are the birds you must not eat: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
- 13the red kite, the falcon, and every kind of kite,
- 14every kind of raven,
- 15the owl, the night hawk, the cuckoo, and every kind of hawk,
- 16the little owl, the great owl, and the swan,
- 17the pelican, the Egyptian vulture, the cormorant,
- 18the stork, every kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
- 19All winged insects are unclean for you — don't eat them.
- 20But you may eat any clean bird.
- 21Don't eat anything that has died on its own. You may give it to a foreigner living in your town, and they can eat it, or you may sell it to someone from another nation. But you must not eat it yourselves, because you are a people set apart as holy to the LORD your God. Also, never boil a young goat in its mother's milk.
- 22Each year, be sure to set aside a tenth of everything your fields produce.
- 23Then bring that tenth — your grain, your new wine, your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks — and eat it in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he chooses for his name to dwell. This will teach you to fear the LORD your God always.
- 24But if the place the LORD your God chooses for his name is too far away, and the LORD has blessed you so abundantly that you can't carry your tithe all that distance,
- 25then sell your tithe, take the money with you, and travel to the place the LORD your God chooses.
- 26Once you get there, spend the money on whatever you want — cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink, or anything else your heart desires. Then eat and celebrate there in the presence of the LORD your God, together with your whole household.
- 27And don't neglect the Levites living in your towns, because they have no land or inheritance of their own.
- 28Every 3 years, gather the entire tithe from that year's harvest and store it in your towns.
- 29The Levites — who have no land or inheritance of their own — along with the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows living in your towns will come and eat until they are satisfied. When you do this, the LORD your God will bless you in everything you put your hand to.
