  1. 1Moses and the elders of Israel gave the people this command: "Obey every commandment I'm giving you today.
  2. 2On the day you cross the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat them with plaster.
  3. 3Write every word of this law on them once you've crossed over, so that you may enter the land the LORD your God is giving you — a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
  4. 4After you cross the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal, just as I'm commanding you today, and coat them with plaster.
  5. 5Build an altar there to the LORD your God — an altar made of stones. Don't use any iron tool on them.
  6. 6Build the altar to the LORD your God using uncut stones, and offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God.
  7. 7Sacrifice peace offerings there as well, and eat and celebrate in the presence of the LORD your God.
  8. 8Write every word of this law on the stones, clearly and plainly."
  9. 9Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, "Pay attention and listen, Israel! Today you have become the people of the LORD your God."
  10. 10So obey the LORD your God and follow his commandments and statutes that I'm giving you today."

  13. 13These tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
  14. 14The Levites will speak and say to all the men of Israel with a loud voice:
  15. 15'Cursed is anyone who carves or casts an idol — something the LORD despises — crafted by human hands, and sets it up in secret.' All the people will answer, 'Amen.'
