  1. 1When all these things happen to you—the blessing and the curse that I have set before you—and you remember them among all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you,
  2. 2and when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul, following everything I'm commanding you today,
  3. 3then the LORD your God will have compassion on you. He will free you from captivity and gather you back from all the nations where he scattered you.
  4. 4Even if you are driven out to the farthest parts of heaven, the LORD your God will gather you from there and bring you back.
  5. 5The LORD your God will bring you into the land your ancestors once owned, and you will possess it again. He will make you prosper and increase your numbers beyond what your ancestors ever knew.
  6. 6The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, so that you love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul — and truly live.
  7. 7Then the LORD your God will turn all these curses against your enemies — the people who hated and persecuted you.
  8. 8You will come back and obey the LORD's voice, keeping all the commandments I'm giving you today.
  9. 9The LORD your God will make you prosper in everything you do — your children, your livestock, and your crops will all flourish. The LORD will once again take delight in blessing you, just as he delighted in blessing your ancestors,
  10. 10as long as you obey the LORD your God by keeping his commandments and laws written in this book of the law, and as long as you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul.
  11. 11For this commandment that I am giving you today is not hidden from you, nor is it far away.
  12. 12It isn't up in heaven, so that you'd have to ask, "Who will go up to heaven for us, bring it down, and explain it to us so we can follow it?"
  13. 13And it isn't across the sea, so that you'd have to ask, "Who will cross the sea for us, bring it back, and explain it to us so we can follow it?"
  14. 14No — the word is right here with you. It's already on your lips and in your heart, ready for you to live it out.
  15. 15See, today I have set before you life and good, and death and evil;
  16. 16I'm commanding you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments, laws, and regulations. If you do, you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you're crossing over to possess.
  17. 17But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen — if you let yourselves be lured into worshiping and serving other gods —
  18. 18then I'm telling you plainly today: you will be destroyed. You won't last long in the land you're crossing the Jordan to possess.
  19. 19I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today: I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. So choose life, so that you and your descendants may live!
  20. 20so that you may love the LORD your God, obey his voice, and hold tightly to him; for he is your life and the length of your days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
