  1. 1These are the terms of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to establish with the people of Israel in the land of Moab — a covenant in addition to the one he had already made with them at Horeb.
  2. 2Moses called all Israel together and said to them, "You saw with your own eyes everything the LORD did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to all his land.
  3. 3The great trials your eyes have seen, the signs, and the great miracles:
  4. 4But to this day, the LORD has not given you a heart that truly understands, eyes that truly see, or ears that truly hear.
  5. 5For 40 years I led you through the wilderness. During that time, your clothes never wore out, and your sandals never fell apart on your feet.
  6. 6You didn't eat bread or drink wine or any other strong drink — so that you would know that I am the LORD your God.
  7. 7When you arrived at this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan marched out to fight us, and we defeated them.
  8. 8We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
  9. 9So obey the terms of this covenant and follow them carefully, so that you will succeed in everything you do.
  10. 10Today, all of you are standing before the LORD your God — your leaders, your tribal heads, your elders, your officials, and every man in Israel,
  11. 11along with your children, your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps, from those who chop your wood to those who carry your water.
  12. 12You are here to enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, sealed with an oath, which the LORD your God is making with you today.
  13. 13He is doing this to establish you as his own people, and to be your God — just as he promised you and swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  14. 14This covenant and this oath are not just for you alone.
  15. 15They are for everyone standing here with us today before the LORD our God, and also for those who are not here with us today.
  16. 16(For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the nations that you passed by.
  17. 17You saw their disgusting practices and their idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold.)
  18. 18Make sure there is no man, woman, family, or tribe among you whose heart turns away from the LORD our God today to go and worship the gods of those nations. Don't let there be a root among you that produces bitter poison.
  19. 19And when someone hears the words of this curse, he blesses himself in his heart, thinking, 'I will have peace, even though I follow my own desires,' adding drunkenness to thirst.
  20. 20The LORD will not spare that person. Instead, the LORD's anger and jealousy will burn against him, and every curse written in this book will fall on him. The LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.
  21. 21The LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, in keeping with every curse of the covenant written in this book of the law.
  22. 22Future generations — your own descendants and foreigners who come from distant lands — will see the devastation of the land and the diseases the LORD has brought upon it, and they will ask,
  23. 23'Why is this entire land nothing but sulfur, salt, and scorched earth? Nothing is planted, nothing grows — not even a blade of grass. It looks like Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his fierce anger.'
  24. 24Every nation will ask, 'Why did the LORD do this to this land? What caused such burning anger?'
  25. 25And the answer will be: 'Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors — the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.
  26. 26They went off and served other gods, bowing down to gods they had never known — gods the LORD had never assigned to them.
  27. 27So the LORD's anger burned against this land, and he brought down on it every curse written in this book.
  28. 28In his anger, wrath, and fierce fury, the LORD uprooted them from their land and threw them into another land, where they remain to this day."
  29. 29The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may do all the words of this law.
