  1. 1These are the commands, laws, and regulations that the LORD your God told me to teach you, so that you would follow them in the land you're about to cross over and take as your own.
  2. 2The purpose is that you would fear the LORD your God and obey all his laws and commands — you, your children, and your grandchildren — every day of your lives, so that you may live long.
  3. 3So listen carefully, Israel, and be sure to obey. Then things will go well for you, and you will multiply greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you — in a land flowing with milk and honey.
  4. 4Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
  5. 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.
  6. 6These words that I command you today shall be in your heart.
  7. 7Teach them carefully to your children. Talk about them when you're sitting at home, when you're walking down the road, when you lie down at night, and when you get up in the morning.
  8. 8Bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
  9. 9Write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates.
  10. 10When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to give your ancestors — to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — you'll find large, beautiful cities that you didn't build,
  11. 11houses already filled with good things you didn't put there, cisterns you didn't dig, and vineyards and olive groves you didn't plant. When you've eaten your fill,
  12. 12be careful that you don't forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land where you were slaves.
  13. 13Fear the LORD your God, serve him, and swear by his name.
  14. 14Don't chase after other gods — the gods of the nations around you —
  15. 15because the LORD your God, who lives among you, is a jealous God. If you do, his anger will burn against you, and he will wipe you off the face of the earth.
  16. 16Don't test the LORD your God the way you tested him at Massah.
  17. 17Be diligent about keeping the commands of the LORD your God — his testimonies and his laws that he has given you.
  18. 18Do what the LORD considers right and good. Then things will go well for you, and you'll be able to enter and take possession of the good land the LORD promised to your ancestors,
  19. 19driving out all your enemies ahead of you, just as the LORD said he would.
  20. 20Someday your son will ask you, "What do these testimonies, laws, and regulations that the LORD our God gave you actually mean?"
  21. 21Tell him, "We were slaves under Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.
  22. 22Before our eyes, the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and devastating, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household.
  23. 23He brought us out of there so he could bring us here — to give us the land he had sworn to our ancestors.
  24. 24The LORD commanded us to follow all these laws and to fear the LORD our God. It's always for our own good, so that he can keep us alive, as we are today.
  25. 25We will be counted as righteous if we carefully obey all these commands in the presence of the LORD our God, just as he told us to."
