- 1Moses gathered all of Israel together and said to them, "Listen, Israel! I'm giving you these laws and regulations today. Learn them, and make sure you follow them."
- 2The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
- 3The LORD didn't make this covenant with our ancestors — he made it with us, all of us standing here alive today.
- 4The LORD spoke to you face to face on the mountain from the middle of the fire.
- 5(I stood between the LORD and you at that time to relay his word to you, because you were terrified of the fire and wouldn't go up the mountain.) He said:
- 6"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land where you were slaves.
- 7"You must have no other gods besides me.
- 8"You must not make an idol for yourself — no carved image of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath the earth.
- 9You must not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the 3rd and 4th generation of those who hate me,
- 10but I show mercy to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments.
- 11You must not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
- 12"Keep the Sabbath day holy, just as the LORD your God commanded you.
- 13You have 6 days to do all your work,
- 14but the 7th day is a Sabbath belonging to the LORD your God. On that day, no one may do any work — not you, your son, your daughter, your male servant, your female servant, your ox, your donkey, any of your livestock, or any foreigner living among you. Your servants must rest just as you do.
- 15Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there with his mighty hand and outstretched arm. That is why the LORD your God commands you to observe the Sabbath day.
- 16Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well for you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
- 17"You must not murder.
- 18"You must not commit adultery.
- 19"You must not steal.
- 20"You must not give false testimony against your neighbor.
- 21"You must not desire your neighbor's wife. You must not covet your neighbor's house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
- 22The LORD spoke these words to your entire assembly on the mountain, out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness, with a great voice. He added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
- 23When you heard that voice coming out of the darkness while the mountain blazed with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me.
- 24You said, "The LORD our God has shown us his glory and his greatness! We've heard his voice from the middle of the fire. Today we've seen that God can speak directly to a human being, and that person can still live.
- 25But why should we risk death? This enormous fire will destroy us! If we hear the voice of the LORD our God again, we'll die.
- 26Has any mortal ever heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of a fire the way we have — and survived?
- 27You go closer and listen to everything the LORD our God says. Then tell us what he told you, and we'll listen and obey."
- 28The LORD heard what you said when you spoke to me, and he told me, "I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They have spoken well in all that they have said."
- 29If only they would always have hearts like this — hearts that fear me and keep all my commandments — then things would go well for them and their children forever!
- 30"Go tell them to return to their tents.
- 31But you stay here with me. I will give you all the commandments, laws, and regulations that you are to teach them, so they can follow them in the land I'm giving them to possess."
- 32So be careful to do exactly what the LORD your God has commanded you. Don't stray to the right or to the left.
- 33Walk in all the ways the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may have a long life in the land you will possess.
