- 1I, therefore, as a prisoner of the Lord, urge you to live in a way that is worthy of the calling you have received.
- 2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
- 3Make every effort to stay united in the Spirit, held together by peace.
- 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were all called to one shared hope.
- 5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
- 6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
- 7But each one of us has been given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
- 8That's why Scripture says, "When he ascended to the heights, he led captivity captive and gave gifts to men."
- 9Now that it says he ascended, what does it mean but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
- 10The one who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.
- 11He gave some people to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers.
- 12To perfect the saints, for the work of the ministry, and to build up the body of Christ.
- 13This will continue until all of us reach unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God — becoming fully mature, measured by nothing less than the full stature of Christ himself.
- 14Then we will no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men and their cunning craftiness, as they lie in wait to deceive.
- 15Instead, by speaking the truth in love, we will grow up in every way into Christ, who is the head.
- 16From him, the whole body is fitted and held together by every supporting joint. As each individual part does its work, the body grows and builds itself up in love.
- 17So I say this and testify in the Lord: do not live as other Gentiles do, in the emptiness of their thinking.
- 18Their understanding is clouded in darkness. They're cut off from the life of God because of the ignorance inside them, caused by the hardness of their hearts.
- 19Having become past feeling, they have given themselves over to sensuality, to practice all impurity with greediness.
- 20But you have not learned Christ in this way;
- 21Surely you heard his message and were taught the truth that is found in Jesus —
- 22that you put off your old self, the way of life you used to follow, which is corrupt due to its deceitful desires;
- 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.
- 24And put on the new self, which is created after God in righteousness and true holiness.
- 25So stop lying to each other. Speak the truth to your neighbor, because we are all parts of the same body.
- 26Be angry, but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.
- 27Do not give the devil a foothold.
- 28If you used to steal, stop stealing. Instead, work hard with your own hands at something good, so you'll have something to share with anyone in need.
- 29Don't let any rotten words come out of your mouth. Only say what is helpful for building others up when they need it, so that your words bring grace to everyone who hears them.
- 30Don't grieve the Holy Spirit of God, who has sealed you for the day of redemption.
- 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, along with every form of malice.
- 32Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other — just as God forgave you through Christ.
