- 1Then some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat down in front of me.
- 2Then the word of the LORD came to me:
- 3Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and placed the sin that causes them to stumble right in front of their faces. Should I be consulted by them at all?
- 4"So speak to them and tell them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: Any person in Israel who sets up idols in his heart and puts the sin that causes him to stumble right in front of his face, and then comes to a prophet — I, the LORD, will answer that person according to the number of idols he worships.
- 5So that I may take hold of the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.
- 6So tell the people of Israel, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: Repent! Turn away from your idols and turn your faces away from all your abominations.'
- 7Anyone in Israel — or any foreigner living among them — who cuts himself off from me, sets up idols in his heart, puts the sin that causes him to stumble right in front of his face, and then goes to a prophet to ask me for guidance — I, the LORD, will answer that person myself.
- 8I will turn against that person and make him a sign and a proverb. I will cut him off from my people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
- 9And if a prophet is deceived when he gives a message, I, the LORD, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel.
- 10They will bear the punishment for their guilt. The prophet’s punishment will be the same as the punishment of the one who seeks him.
- 11The purpose of all this is so that the people of Israel will never again wander away from me or be polluted by all their transgressions. Instead, they will be my people, and I will be their God," declares the Lord GOD.
- 12The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 13Son of man, when a land sins against me by trespassing grievously, I will stretch out my hand against it, break its staff of bread, send famine upon it, and cut off both people and animals from it.
- 14Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would save only their own souls by their righteousness, declares the Lord GOD.
- 15"Or suppose I send dangerous wild animals through the land, and they ravage it until it becomes so desolate that no one dares travel through it because of the beasts.
- 16As surely as I live," declares the Lord GOD, "even if those three men were in that land, they could not save their own sons or daughters. Only they themselves would be rescued, and the land would still be left desolate.
- 17"Or suppose I bring war against that land and command the sword, 'Cut through this land!' — wiping out both people and animals.
- 18“As surely as I live,” declares the Lord GOD, “even if those three men were in it, they could not save their sons or daughters. They alone would be saved.”
- 19"Or suppose I send a plague into that land and pour out my fury on it with bloodshed, cutting off both people and animals.
- 20As surely as I live," declares the Lord GOD, "even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were there, they could not save a single son or daughter. Their righteousness would rescue only their own souls."
- 21This is what the Lord GOD says: “How much more when I send my four severe judgments on Jerusalem—the sword, famine, harmful wild beasts, and plague—to cut off from it both people and animals?”
- 22Yet a remnant will be left there—sons and daughters who will be brought out. When they come to you and you see their ways and their doings, you will be comforted about the disaster I brought on Jerusalem and about everything I brought on it.
- 23They will comfort you when you see their ways and actions, and you will know that I have not done anything without cause, declares the Lord GOD.
