Just as a metalworker gathers silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into a furnace and blasts it with fire to melt it down, I will gather you in my fierce anger, throw you in, and melt you.

KJVKing James Version

As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you.

Verse Analysis

Plain-English insight for readers

In this verse, God uses the imagery of a metalworker to convey a powerful message. Just as a craftsman gathers various metals and subjects them to intense heat to purify them, God is saying He will gather His people in His anger. This gathering is not for their comfort but for a purpose. The heat symbolizes the trials and challenges they will face. God’s fierce anger is a response to their actions, and the melting represents a process of transformation. It’s a call to recognize the seriousness of their situation and the need for change. The ultimate goal is to refine and purify, much like how metals are made stronger through fire. This verse serves as a reminder that sometimes, difficult experiences can lead to growth and renewal, urging us to reflect on our lives and seek improvement. God’s intention is not to destroy but to reshape and restore His people into something valuable and pure, just as metal is transformed in the furnace. Understanding this can help us embrace our challenges as opportunities for growth. Explore related purification.

The Book of Ezekiel

Ezekiel 1: Visions of God

The word of the LORD comes to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the river Chebar in the land of the Chaldeans. He sees visions of God as the heavens open. A great cloud comes from the north with a fire flashing continually and brightness around it, and from the midst appears something like glowing metal. From the fire emerge four living creatures, each with the likeness of a man. Each has four faces and four wings, and their legs are straight with feet like a calf's foot, shining like polished brass. Their faces are those of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle, and their wings are joined one to another as they move straight forward without turning.
