KJVKing James Version

Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.

Verse Analysis

Plain-English insight for readers

In this passage, God expresses deep sorrow over a city known for its violence and bloodshed. The imagery of a rusty pot symbolizes the city's corruption and inability to cleanse itself. Just as the pot is filled with scum that cannot be removed, the city is filled with wrongdoing that cannot be ignored. God instructs to take out the meat piece by piece, indicating that judgment will come in a deliberate manner. Each piece represents the consequences of the city's actions, showing that there is no escape from accountability. This message serves as a warning about the dangers of a life filled with violence and injustice. It highlights the importance of recognizing our flaws and seeking change before it’s too late. Ultimately, it’s a call to reflect on our own lives and the impact of our choices on ourselves and others. God desires a community that seeks justice and righteousness, rather than one steeped in bloodshed and corruption. The passage invites us to consider how we can contribute to a better world.

Ezekiel 1: Visions of God

The word of the LORD comes to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the river Chebar in the land of the Chaldeans. He sees visions of God as the heavens open. A great cloud comes from the north with a fire flashing continually and brightness around it, and from the midst appears something like glowing metal. From the fire emerge four living creatures, each with the likeness of a man. Each has four faces and four wings, and their legs are straight with feet like a calf's foot, shining like polished brass. Their faces are those of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle, and their wings are joined one to another as they move straight forward without turning.
