  1. 1On the 10th day of the 10th month, in the 9th year, the word of the LORD came to me:
  2. 2"Son of man, write down today's date, because on this very day the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem."
  3. 3Then tell a parable to this rebellious people. Say to them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: Put a cooking pot on the fire. Set it on and pour water into it.
  4. 4Fill it with the best cuts of meat — the thigh and the shoulder — and pack it with the finest bones.
  5. 5Take the choice of the flock, and also burn the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them boil the bones of it in it.
  6. 6Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is in it, and whose scum has not gone out of it! Bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.
  7. 7The blood she shed is still right out in the open. She splashed it on bare rock instead of pouring it on the ground where dust could cover it.
  8. 8To stir up my fury and bring vengeance, I have left her blood exposed on bare rock where it cannot be covered."
  9. 9"So this is what the Lord GOD says: How terrible it will be for the city of bloodshed! I myself will pile the firewood high.
  10. 10Heap on the wood! Stoke the flames! Cook the meat thoroughly, thicken the broth, and let the bones char.
  11. 11Then set the empty pot back on the coals until it glows red-hot, so the bronze itself burns and the filth baked into it melts away and the rust is consumed.
  12. 12She has wearied herself with lies, and her great scum did not go out of her: her scum will be in the fire.
  13. 13Your filthiness is lewdness. I tried to cleanse you, but you were not cleansed. You will not be cleansed from your filthiness anymore until I have caused my fury to rest upon you.
  14. 14I, the LORD, have spoken it: it will happen, and I will do it. I will not go back, neither will I spare, nor will I repent. You will be judged according to your ways and your actions," declares the Lord GOD.
  15. 15Then the word of the LORD came to me:
  16. 16Son of man, look, I take away from you the desire of your eyes with a stroke: yet you must not mourn or weep, and your tears must not run down.
  17. 17Refrain from crying, make no mourning for the dead. Keep your turban on your head and your sandals on your feet. Do not cover your lips, and do not eat the bread of men.
  18. 18I spoke to the people that morning, and that evening my wife died. The next morning I did exactly as I had been commanded.
  19. 19The people asked me, "Won't you explain what this means for us? Why are you acting this way?"
  20. 20So I told them, "The word of the LORD came to me. He said:
  21. 21Speak to the house of Israel, This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellence of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pities; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left will fall by the sword.
  22. 22And you will do as I have done: you will not cover your lips or eat the bread of men.
  23. 23You will keep your turbans on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or weep, but you will waste away for your iniquities and mourn with one another.
  24. 24Ezekiel will be a sign for you. When the time comes, you will do exactly what he has done. And then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.'"
  25. 25And you, son of man, on the day I take away their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that on which they set their minds—their sons and their daughters—
  26. 26on that day, a survivor will escape and come to you with the news, and you will hear it with your own ears.
  27. 27On that day, your mouth will be opened and you will speak to the survivor. You will no longer be silent. You will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD."
