- 1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- 2The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the surface of the deep. The Spirit of God moved over the waters.
- 3Then God said, "Let there be light," and light appeared.
- 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
- 5God named the light "Day" and the darkness he named "Night." Evening came, and then morning — the 1st day.
- 6Then God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate water from water."
- 7So God made the expanse and separated the waters beneath it from the waters above it. And so it was.
- 8God called the expanse "Heaven." Evening came, and then morning — the 2nd day.
- 9Then God said, "Let the waters beneath the heavens be gathered into one place, and let dry ground appear." And so it was.
- 10God called the dry ground "Earth," and the gathered waters he called "Seas." God saw that it was good.
- 11Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth." And it was so.
- 12The earth produced grass, seed-bearing plants according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seeds according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.
- 13Evening came, and then morning — the 3rd day.
- 14Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate day from night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years.
- 15Let them shine in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth." And so it was.
- 16God made 2 great lights — the larger one to govern the day and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars.
- 17God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to shine light on the earth,
- 18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good.
- 19Evening came, and then morning — the 4th day.
- 20Then God said, "Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the open expanse of the heavens."
- 21So God created the great sea creatures and every kind of living thing that moves and swarms in the waters, and every kind of winged bird. God saw that it was good.
- 22God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."
- 23Evening came, and then morning — the 5th day.
- 24Then God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds — livestock, creatures that crawl along the ground, and wild animals." And so it was.
- 25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls on the ground according to its kind. God saw that it was good.
- 26Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the fowl of the air, the cattle, all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
- 27So God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created him — male and female he created them.
- 28God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, and every living thing that moves on the earth."
- 29Then God said, "Look — I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that bears fruit with seeds. They will be your food.
- 30To every animal of the earth, every bird of the heavens, and everything that crawls on the earth that has life, I have given every green plant for food." And so it was.
- 31God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good. Evening came, and then morning — the 6th day.
