  1. 1So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were complete.
  2. 2By the seventh day, God had finished all his work which he had made. On the seventh day, he rested from all his work.
  3. 3God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested from all the work of creation.
  4. 4These are the accounts of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
  5. 5there were no wild plants or crops growing yet, because the LORD God hadn't sent rain, and there was no one to work the ground.
  6. 6But a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
  7. 7Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.
  8. 8The LORD God planted a garden in the east, in Eden, and there he put the man he had formed.
  9. 9Out of the ground, the LORD God grew every kind of tree — beautiful to look at and good for food. In the middle of the garden stood the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  10. 10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it split into four rivers.
  11. 11The first river was named Pishon, and it flowed around the land of Havilah, where gold is found.
  12. 12The gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are also found there.
  13. 13The second river was named Gihon, and it flowed around the land of Cush.
  14. 14The third river was named Tigris, and it flowed east of Assyria. The fourth river was the Euphrates.
  15. 15The LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to care for it and maintain it.
  16. 16The LORD God gave the man this instruction: "You may freely eat from any tree in the garden,
  17. 17but do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. For on the day you eat from it, you will surely die.
  18. 18Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him."
  19. 19So the LORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and birds, and brought them to the man to see what he would name them. Whatever he called each creature, that became its name.
  20. 20The man gave names to all the livestock, birds, and wild animals. But none of them was the right companion for him.
  21. 21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While he slept, God took one of his ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
  22. 22God formed the rib into a woman and brought her to the man.
  23. 23The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."
  24. 24That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and they become one flesh.
  25. 25The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
