  1. 1Let us therefore fear, lest, while a promise of entering into his rest is left to us, any of you should seem to fall short of it.
  2. 2The good news was preached to us just as it was to them. But the message they heard didn't do them any good, because they didn't combine it with faith when they heard it.
  3. 3For we who have believed do enter into rest, as he said, 'As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest,' although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
  4. 4Somewhere in Scripture he said this about the seventh day: "God rested on the seventh day from all his works."
  5. 5And in this place again, "If they shall enter into my rest."
  6. 6So the opportunity to enter that rest still remains open. Those who first heard the good news didn't enter it because of their unbelief.
  7. 7Again, he sets a certain day, saying through David after so long a time, 'Today' — as it was said before: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.'
  8. 8If Joshua had given them rest, then God would not have spoken later about another day.
  9. 9So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
  10. 10Anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their own work, just as God rested from his.
  11. 11Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one falls by following the same pattern of unbelief.
  12. 12For the word of God is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. It pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and it discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
  13. 13No creature is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
  14. 14Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens — Jesus, the Son of God — let us hold firmly to what we profess.
  15. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but he was tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin.
  16. 16So let us come boldly to the throne of grace, where we can receive mercy and find grace to help us when we need it most.
